Damage to latex during SM

Akemi42 ws concerned about the following:

I have heard some mixed messages about latex and flogging and any sort of SM play. Is it really going to damage latex to spank or flog it? What about using rubber implements on the latex?

I really enjoy this type of play, but question the possibility of ruining a $300 garment for a few good whacks.
